GILL COX
It seems I have been painting for most of my life.
I have also, for many years, taught others to
discover the delights of both Watercolour
and Oil painting. Now I am the resident tutor for the
summer workshops of Sejours Artistiques in the
Charente Maritime region of France, whose chosen
charities I support by giving my tuition free.
Living in this quintessentially beautiful coastal village
of Hope Cove, in the South Hams of Devon, is both captivating and inspirational, whatever the season. I enjoy portraying my favourite haunts and secret places, round and about the beaches and headlands, capturing the remarkable light changes on sea, land and sky. My work is spontaneous and prolific these days, echoing a sense of urgency, and awareness of producing a certain quality and style, as time marches on.
Flexibility and a sense of exploration has assisted me to push beyond the barriers to discover my full potential. Therefore many different situations and environments attract the need to be ongoing with my art........ particularly depicting atmosphere.
Occasionally, the wilderness of Dartmoor beckons, providing the opportunity to paint the bleak raw habitat and large expanse of moor and threatening skies. Already I am eagerly gathering material and compiling rough sketches for my first solo Exhibition at The new Duchy Gallery in Princetown in July 2011.
My work has been exhibited in various venues spread across Devon including locally at The Mayne Gallery, Kingsbridge and The Royal William Yard, Plymouth. My paintings have found homes in Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire and further afield in France, Canada and the USA.
Colour, light and atmosphere are vital ingredients towards fulfilling the passion I feel when painting. This is very much a part of how I wish to get my message across to those who enjoy the finished results.
There is a distinct difference, in a spiritual sense, between the rapid expression of wielding my knife vigorously to spread paint across canvas, from that of the more dexterous application to convey the subtlety, and more delicate approach towards administering my watercolour work. I derive immense pleasure from both, depending on the frame of mind at the time! The driving force from either, is compelling, stimulating and relentless.
